One of the biggest complaints that seniors and their families have about medical appointments is that seniors don’t get enough time with their doctors. Sometimes seniors are rushed through an appointment that lasts only a couple of minutes and before the senior can even fully describe how they are doing or what their symptoms are the appointment is over.
That’s not the doctor’s fault. When appointments are over-scheduled it means that none of the patients get the time they need to discuss their current health concerns with their doctor. But in-home doctor visits can be a game changer for seniors who are feeling like they’re not being heard when it comes to their medical care.
With in-home doctor visits a senior’s doctor can take the extra time to really listen to any concerns that the senior patient or their families have. That one on one approach creates more trust and a better relationship between doctor and patient. And that increased trust can lead to a better quality of care for seniors who may need some extra time to talk about their medical issues and concerns with their doctor.
There are other benefits to in-home doctor visits too like:
Seniors Can Stay Indoors
When the weather is cold, raining, snowing, or even dangerously hot seniors won’t need to brave the element to get to their medical appointment. In-home doctor visits mean seniors can stay comfortably at home without having to worry about what the weather is doing. For seniors who use wheelchairs or walkers not having to go out when it’s snowing or slippery means no struggle to get from the car to the building and no chance of taking a bad fall outdoors. That’s important for many seniors.
No Transportation Needed
Often when seniors have medical appointments family caregivers will need to completely rearrange their schedules. Getting child care, taking time off from work, and making time to get to either very early or middle of the day appointments can be extremely inconvenient and difficult for family caregivers. It’s also stressful for seniors who may get nauseous in the car or have to struggle with equipment like oxygen tanks, wheelchairs, or walkers. With in-home doctor visits seniors and their families won’t have the stress of a commute to and from the doctor’s office.
More Accurate Vital Readings
When doctors take readings of a senior’s blood pressure and heart rate they need to have the most accurate reading possible. Without an accurate reading they won’t know if that senior needs an adjustment to their medication or if they need medication for common ailments like heart disease. Going to the doctor’s office can be so stressful that it raises a senior’s blood pressure and speeds up their heart rate so the readings that the doctor gets in the office are abnormally high. Taking vitals when a senior is in their own home and feels comfortable and relaxed can mean getting very different readings than the readings they would get at the office. And those more accurate readings at home will allow doctors to give better care to seniors.
